Description:
Translates the clinical care of the patient into a coded format for timely statistical and reimbursement purposes by assigning diagnosis and procedure codes accurately, comprehensively and to the highest level of specificity according to an international classification system (ICD-9-CM) and CPT for outpatient procedures. Clinical and statistical data is used by Quality Outcomes Management, research, JCAHO performance improvement, Texas Health Care Information Council (THCIC) and other internal and external entities.
Minimum Job Qualifications
Minimum Education: High School/GED
Preferred Education: Two Year Degree
Minimum years in field previous to employment: 3
Preferred number of years in field: 5
Must have thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Three to four years as a DRG coder in an acute care facility. Must be proficient with ICD-9-CM and CPT coding in a hospital environment.
Licensure, Certification and/or Registration: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) required.
